To kick off the start of the B1 Project I will first be taking some time to discuss my personal goals and what progression I wish to take in order to fit into a job roll within the games industry.
The role I wish to play in the games industry is definitely 3D modelling as I feel it is what I enjoy the most and I feel it is a subject which has a lot of scope and flexibility for the long run.
When it comes to skills required to be a 3D Artist there are plenty of things to consider, a 3D Artist must be able to concept at a good level so that they can take any initial ideas and take them into the pipeline process of soft and hard modelling and then texturing and engine implementation. The modelling side of a 3D Artist is the ability to use software to make props and characters for games using software such as Blender, 3DS Max, Maya and more. In terms of texturing a 3D Artist must be able to use software like Photoshop, Substance Painter, Z-Brush and more. A 3D Artist should also have a basic understanding of how to implement there work into engine and be able to light and render their models.
Now that I have discussed the roles and skills of a 3D Artist I shall talk about how I will bridge the gap in skill from where I am at now to where I need to be in order to be successful in my chosen career. I shall be studying a higher level of education at a University to provide myself the missing skills that I have not yet had the chance to practise because of lack of software and experience. Studying at a University will provide me with the opportunity to experience the software's I talked about earlier that are key in become a professional 3D Artist. This alone should provide plenty of resource for me to bridge the skill gap but as a precaution I plan to stay networked with other Artist and keep my eye out for anything that could help me improve my technical ability.
In terms of future progression from now my short term plan is to get into a Games Art course at De Montfort University to help me gain the skills to reach a professional level of work which leads nicely on to the my medium term goals.
My medium term goal is to use the skills gained from University to land myself a 3D modelling job at a games studio of a good quality. This job role could be with a international company or a company in the UK.
My long term goal is to become a senior 3D Artist at a triple A studio where I will have a good level of understanding as to how my chosen company works and I will
be a very good asset to team.
When talking about games studios it is too early to decide which triple A company I would like to work for, but based on some research into my chosen university and their connection’s I have a good idea on two studios that are not quite triple A but have great reputation and I am a fan off. One of these studios is Rare entertainment, a company who’s game I play called Sea of Thieves, I am a fan of there work and I really love their art style. For a first job working for rare would be an incredible experience. Another local studio in mind would be Codes-Masters a studio know recently for games like Grid 2. I wouldn’t mind working for Code-Masters as I feel they are a really good company, I have even met someone who has worked there for a long time and I was told how great the studio is. Overall these studios would be a realistic starting point for work after University.
