Conventions in Movies
For this lesson I will be talking about two of my favourite movies and I will be discussing their genre by looking at there four categories of conventions. These conventions are story and plot, themes and values, situations and Locations and characters.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
For my first movie I will be talking about Star Wars the phantom menace, I will leave a picture for this movie below and I will start discussing its genre.
Starting with the genre of this movie, we can straight away tell that it is a sci-fi just from the movies picture as we can see lots of cool gadgets like the blue lightsabre on the right. There is also a futuristic ship in the background that further reinforce the idea that this is a sci-fi genre. As well as the props we also can tell by the characters shown on the front cover that this movie includes some weird alien races that suggests that this is also a fantasy as well as a sci-fi. In terms of story and plot for this film it has a very simple plot but it spirals into lots of other story elements, to summarize here is the main plot in just on sentence; Two Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory. That is a very quick take on the story and plot of this movie, it definitely matches the genre of a sci-fi fantasy as once again we are hearing of different alien races such as Sith and Jedi and also hearing about the blockade which in the movie is a giant array of space ships which is very sci-fi. The locations in this movie definitely support the sci-fi fantasy genre as there are lots of different planets in the set of this movie, these planets are a desert planet, a city planet and a royal planet. The city planet definitely represents the sci-fi feel and the royal planet real shows the fantasy of this episode. The themes and values for this episode of star wars are that the trade federation are the greedy evil alliance that are secretly back by a greater force know as the sith and they are confronted by the jedi, a council of peacemakers that serve to protect the galaxy from any threats. The theme here is that there is a classic good vs evil which can be interpreted in other ways such as light vs dark, this works well as it is simple to follow which is good as everything else is very sci-fi and hard to work out. Finally moving on to characters, through out this movie we see a large diversity of different people from aliens to humans that are all portrayed in a sci-fi or fantasy role the humans are like real life were they look normal but act different depending on what their job is, and the aliens are much more weird as they can speak there own language and can come across hostile depending on which role they play in the movie. Overall based on all the points I have discussed it is safe to say that this movie fits very well into the sci-fi fantasy genre.
