This post is about Boundaries, Conflict and Resources in video games. I have taken examples from Call of Duty as well as Destiny 2.
What are Boundaries?
In video games boundaries can be both physical and conceptual. The physical boundaries are found in lots of games such as Destiny 2 or Call of Duty. These boundaries tell players if they should and shouldn't be in a certain area. For example I have left a screenshot of me going out into a restricted part of a Call of Duty match.
Conceptual boundaries are more like a 'come back soon' message, if a player discovers something like an enemy they can sometimes not be able to interact or fight with them due to a lack of something such as level or ability. This is seen allot in Destiny as enemies with higher level requirements than you will often one hit kill you and there is nothing you as a player can do except coming back when you are a higher level.
What is Conflict?
In video games conflict is where the game is blocking the player in their achievement of an objective such as a mission or small task. This is either from the narrative or through a game mechanic. Conflict usually ends up in combat, for example when I play games such as Destiny 2 I often find myself fighting a familiar enemy like the fallen in an easy mission when a group of Taken (a much harder enemy to fight) ends up disrupting my path to the objective. This conflict however is what makes games like Destiny very fun to play as you always end up fighting another enemy at some point.
What are Resources?
In video games resources are probably one of the most important things to include, this can range from planetary materials to a currency that you can spend really money on. For example Destiny 2 has many resources for both a game mechanic and a way of earning money through transactions. The destiny resources are what make the game grindy as without them everything would just come with ease. Planetary materials are what you collect in destiny to upgrade Armor and weaponry, below I will leave some pictures of famous destiny materials.
