In evaluation my crate project was successful as I completed the briefs requirements in time for the hand in. There is both positives and negatives to my pillar which I will discuss below.
My Finished Pillar:
Starting of with the positives of my project; I finished all stages of the brief in time, Research, Design, Modeling and Texturing. The end result of my pillar (As shown above) reflects my research well and shows a clear process of how I created the pillar according to the work flow and pipeline. My blogs for this project are what shows how I have completed each step along the way to eventually make the final result above. I am happy with the level of detail on the pillar, from the sculpting to the texturing of the model. The model its self was created well and with very few errors. Overall the pillar turned out well and is mostly a positive outcome.
The negatives of the pillar project are that I struggled unwrapping the pillar in different parts especially the top part as it had and unwrap that was way to complicated for the basic shape that it was. The issue with the top was that it had some stretched geometry and some very irregular shapes that made it difficult to insert seems around the model to UV map. I solved this issue by adding extra seems around the model so that there were more UV islands when I mapped the model, this meant that more of the model was separate making the stretching go away. Another negative of my project would be that I didn't make my texture as detailed as I would have liked, what I mean by this is that I didn't get to add any masks to add dirt or decay to the texture. In future projects I would liked to add masks so that I can increase the level of detail to my models to help raise my grade. I will practice using masks to further tone my substance painter skills.
As well as positives and negatives of my pillar project I also received some feedback from fellow peers. The feedback I received allot was that the pillar was very short for a Greek pillar, in reviewing my pillar I agree with the feedback and I would definitely change this If I was to do this again. I would also research into the real life size of these Greek pillars to help me correct the dimensions of the pillar in Blender. Apart from the feedback about the size I also got a lot of positive feedback about how it looked and how it was textured, this I am thankful for as it boosts my confidence.
Improvements
Below I have attached a render of my pillar that shows how I have acted on my feedback that I was given. In the render I have changed the size of the pillar so that it is taller, making it more accurate to a Greek pillar like mention in my feedback review above.
In conclusion I am happy with the quality and the looks of my pillar and I hope to produce more work of this quality and work of a even high quality in the future.
