Theory Lesson 1

Research Task

In this research task I will be discussing the difference between my favourite game Destiny 2 and a rival competitor Warframe. I will be looking into how both games have been advertised and how well they have been reviewed. It is important to note that I have played both games and have enjoyed them both as I have experienced the full potential of both games meaning I have gone from a new player to someone who competes in endgame activities. Therefore my opinion will be completely fair.

Trailers

Starting of Warframe I will link the trailer below and I will follow up with a short summary:

After watching this short trailer you can see that the cinematics look incredible and really shows the viewer how action packed and intense the game is. The trailer did a very good job at luring in new players to play the game however as someone who has played this game first hand I can honestly say that the game you play looks totally different to the game shown in the trailer above . This can be bad as when a new player who takes interest in the game is lead into a false sense of gameplay as when they play for the first time they become confused as to why the game looks and feels so different. Over all though the Warframe trailer is very good and shows of what the game aims to provide.

Moving on to the Destiny 2 trailer that I will show you below, it is important to note that the trailer is from the games base release and include no DlC'S:

After watching the Destiny 2 trailer you can already see a massive difference compared to the Warframe trailer. The main difference is that the Destiny 2 trailer actually includes clips of a live gameplay experience. This is already a better trailer just because of the gameplay clips being true and legit compared to Warframes movie like trailer. The fact that destiny have shown gameplay in the trailer shows to me that they are happy showing of there games combat and are not only focused on building a story but a solid first person shooter-Looter. I feel that this trailer is better that the Warframe one in my opinion, I believe that showing the games true play style is important to build a solid player base. This could be a reason that Destiny has done a better job the Warframe however we have to take into account that Destiny 2 had a prequel game witch means that there were many destiny player already in love with the game before its release.

Reviews

Moving on to reviews, I am going to be taking quotes from the IGN website where there are plenty of thoughts and opinions from people who have played the games thoroughly. I will leave a link to the pages I use for both Warframe and Destiny 2.

Starting with Warframe I have carefully taken a paragraph that I feel sums up the experience of playing Warframe, I will leave the text below in quotations and I will talk about it further below.

"Warframe is a dense game – a tangled ball of yarn made up of almost six years of updates, additions, system reworks, and content drops. Its different bits and pieces overlap and twist together in a way that can make it overwhelming to even think about trying to untangle it all, but it also means that there’s an almost inconceivable amount of deep and often extremely entertaining content to discover once you do."

I strongly agree with the quote above as it really connects with the experience that I had when started Warframe for the first time, it truly is a maze to begin with but as much as it may seem to be daunting the best way to have fun and progress is to just dive straight in and start playing. From playing just a few basic missions I found myself personally quite addicted to running and flipping at the speed of light whilst slashing and shooting enemies to the ground. The strategies for this game are endless and as the quote says so is the content. The best way to play Warframe in my opinion is to play with friends, this is because you not only can progress quicker but you also have way more fun.

Next up is Destiny 2, I have once again used IGN reviews to keep it a fair comparison between the games. I will leave another paragraph below and explained my thoughts beneath it.

"From the opening moments, Destiny 2 delivers Dominus Ghaul, an excellent antagonist whose cruelty earns our fury by taking away everything that had been built up in Destiny and its expansions, including our Guardians’ Light. The campaign that follows is filled with brilliant cutscenes that give the cast an opportunity to show great emotional range, and you can hear the sadness and determination in their voices. Zavala (played by Lance Reddick) is unwavering in his plan to assault Ghaul, while Ikora (Gina Torres) seems distraught and near the point of giving up. That context gives both new and returning players a sensible reason to climb the Light-level based power ladder, whether for the first time or all over again. It kept me moving forward through fun missions set in eye-catching environments, including the exhilarating penultimate mission."

The quote above very carefully explains the experience of both Destiny's compelling campaign and its endgame power levelling grind. As the beginning of the quote says Destiny 2 really did deliver us a excellent antagonist who's not only is powerful but is extremely cool looking. Dominus Ghaul really captures the players attention and give the guardian a long quest for revenge as we travel through the story as a vulnerable solder who has no abilities and has to fight without the power of the traveller by are side. I can agree with what the quote describes about how brilliant the campaigns cutscenes are as when playing we are also remind of Dominus Ghauls control of the last city through in depth cutscenes that really help to build Ghauls character. I personally think that the character development of Dominus Ghaul was thrilling all the way up to the epic finale where we take on a light-wielding version of him, it really surprised my how he accomplished such and impossible goal which made defeating him all the more rewarding. It terms of after the main campaign, players where still given plenty of endgame activities and a large power level to grind, this was what kept players playing the game for so long and ultimately leading Destiny to success.

Conclusion

After researching how both games were advertised and how the were reviewed It is time for me to decide witch is the successor. I will be basing my decision on both personal experience but also from what I have found from the research I have completed. Starting with Warframe, I feel that It is a great game and has done well to stay in the spotlight for so long but as someone who has played allot I can honestly say that I find myself struggling to get back into playing as I am given that sense of being in that tangled ball of yarn again not knowing where to begin. I fear this point alone is what drives the popularity and playability of Warframe to the ground as it is a hard game for new and returning players to enjoy. Moving on to Destiny 2, I feel that this is a game that can deliver and epic and ever growing story that is being constantly developed and enjoyed. Destiny 2 has truly mastered the art of attracting new and returning players, this has been recently shown threw the new addition of seasonal content that lasts over 3 months and each seasons is leading the awesome story line on. The addition of seasons in Destiny is a great way to deliver year round content while the major DLC are in preparation, this ultimately means Destiny 2 never runs out of content. Content is a major part of any game but utilising how new and returning players experience it is very important, this is something Warframe has struggled with but as a returning play to Destiny 2 this season I can honestly say that there was no trouble getting involved with the new content and everything was very accessible. In conclusion from comparing those two critical points I can say that Destiny 2 takes the crown for the more successful game both critical and commercially.
