The rock that the Acropolis sits on is a very important asset that needs to be made in Unreal Engine before constructing anything for the Acropolis. When in Unreal Engine we want to have the mindset that we build from the bottom up which is exactly why I have started on the construction of the Acropolis's landscape. The landscape is very simply a giant hill that gives the Acropolis its tremendous height, this hill is where the Greeks flatted down the land so they could build there structures and buildings so I shall do the exact same.
First I opened a fresh and blank Unreal project titled Acropolis. This file will be the location in which all my work comes together in. Once the file is load the first thing to do is clear any unwanted pre-sets that were given to you and switch over to the landscape mode at the top of the window:
Once on landscape mode I am ready to begin as soon as I create the template, there is no need to change the template settings so I leave it and just click create.
Now that we have created the template to sculpt on its time to start sculpting out the Acropolis rock. Using my research and mood boards of the Acropolis I am creating a sculpt of the rock for the buildings to be placed on.
The tools are at the top of the viewport, these are what I use to begin creating the landscape. To begin with I start making a general perimeter of the rock which I can eventually expand, this is all done using the sculpt tool.
With the general perimeter made I simple layer over and over again until it is at a suitable height that matches my research. Once I am happy with the height I begin filling up the middle by clicking the highest point using the flatten tool and drawing around the middle her is the result below:
Now that I have a nice flat piece of landscape it is now ready for grey-boxing and further work such as texturing. With this made I can now use my research to really start piecing together where the buildings will go and where the key attributes of the Acropolis will be.
I have gone back and made some improvements to my landscape be adding more detail using the Erosion and Hydro tools to build up the sides some more as they where very flat, below is the final result of the Acropolis rock:
